Interisland Ferries
When you travel between New Zealand's North and South Islands, there are two ferry options from which you can choose, the Bluebridge and Interislander:
The Bluebridge ferry travels the same route as the Interislander, carrying both passengers and vehicles between downtown Wellington and Picton up to four times daily with a range of fares to suit your budget. On-board you'll find a full cafe-style menu, premium Caffe L'affare coffee and award-winning Marlborough wines and craft beer. And if you can take your eyes off the views, kick back with free WiFi, free movies and play areas for the kids. The Bluebridge journey takes about 3.5 hours.

Sleeper Service: Bluebridge also has a unique sleeper service heading south from Wellington. Check into your cabin between 11.45pm and 12.15 am (ahead of the early morning 2.30am sailing), then awake refreshed in Picton at 6am.
Interislander's Cook Strait Ferries travel between Wellington and Picton New Zealand. The 92km voyage takes 3 hours and has been described as "one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world".
Interislander operates three passenger ferries: Arahura, Aratere and Kaitaki. Each offers a safe, comfortable and affordable journey between the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Each also provides a complete range of onboard services, to ensure that your trip across the Cook Strait will be both enjoyable and unforgettable.
Book your Interisland Ferry Crossing
When you rent from Omega Rental Cars and are crossing by ferry, you can choose whether to retain the same vehicle for the duration of your hire (which many of our customers prefer) or you can take advantage of our ferry exchange service where you leave your North Island car with our Wellington staff and pick up a new car in Picton, or vice versa. This saves you the cost of taking the vehicle on the ferry.
In order to do this you need to spend a minimum of seven (7) consecutive days in each Island and it is dependent on the availability of a vehicle on the other side, of course.
For any travel between the North & South islands on a Multi-Island Hire, it is your responsibility to book the Interisland Ferry crossing, however you can select this option on our website when you make your rental car booking. We will receive a notification of your request for a ferry booking and contact you to confirm your preferred sailing times. All the fares we offer on our website are fully flexible if your plans do need to change, although are subject to availability of course.
