National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy
Situated in the historic Torpedo Bay in Devonport, the National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy tells the story of the Royal New Zealand Navy’s past. The Navy Museum plays a crucial role in preserving the Royal Navy’s physical, social and cultural heritage.

Historical Collections
The National Navy Museum holds a diverse collection of objects showcasing the history of the Royal New Zealand Navy including weaponry, personal possessions, swords, naval clothing and uniforms, ship items and more. Each artefact in the collection tells its own intriguing story or plays a part in relaying a much larger story about the Royal New Zealand Navy.
The museum also features artwork, including some by Colin Wynn, who became the first official artist of the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1982.
The museum’s photographic collection is also a highlight. You can find interesting images depicting the history of the New Zealand Navy, collected from a variety of sources including veterans and their families, official photographers commissioned by the Navy, and current sailors displayed throughout the museum’s galleries.
Tours
For a unique look into the New Zealand Navy’s history, visitors may take a tour with one of the Navy Museum’s friendly guide hosts (depending on staff availability). Tours for up to one hour can be tailored to suit visitor needs. For groups of 10 or more, bookings are recommended.
Education Programmes
The Navy Museum offers fantastic learning experiences for students and teachers. Your visit could include a facilitated museum session with the museum’s educator, self-guided museum activities, student inquiries or even a visit to the nearby attractions in Devonport, New Zealand, such as Fort Takapuna or North Head. The Museum also provides a range of targeted educational programmes to suit students from early childhood through to tertiary and ESOL.
Venue Hire
In addition to its excellent learning facilities and guided tours, the Navy Museum also offers a unique concept in conference facilities. The War Room is available to hire for groups of up to 16 people. Steeped in naval history and surrounded by stunning natural beauty, there’s no other conference venue in New Zealand quite like it. The venue is easy to reach, with plenty of free parking available and is a 15-20 walk from the Devonport Ferry Terminal. The cost for a full day’s venue hire is $450, and $250+GST for half a day.
The Royal New Zealand Navy Museum is open every day of the year apart from Good Friday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Admission to the museum is free.
