Vin Alto Vineyard, Clevedon, Auckland
Enzo and his family have created a beautiful family home, vineyard and restaurant in a picturesque rural valley in Clevedon, just 45 mins from central Auckland. It’s a long way from Enzo’s original Italian home but after only a few sips of his delightful pinot grigio or muscato it’s very easy to imagine you’ve been transported. We have visited Vin Alto for a meal and/or late afternoon gatherings with friends or work colleagues on several occasions now and just love the relaxed and peaceful ambience and leave charmed by the family’s hospitality.
The restaurant is housed in a building Enzo had built on the property using beams that were once part of a Devonport wharf. These massive rustic hardwood trusses give real substance to the high ceilinged structure which is also home to collections of china, teaspoons and other trinkets. The tiled courtyard to the rear features oak barrels, deer antlers, a giant catering-size brick barbecue regularly used in the preparation of guest’s meals and even a child’s playhouse.
Look out across the valley where the deer graze in the paddock and follow Enzo’s advice on the wine matches, you’ll find both the food and the wine are a real treat. Like us, you’ll probably leave with a bottle of Limoncello tucked under one arm to share with friends when you’re explaining what they missed. Do ring ahead and book, though, as Vin Alto is not open every weekend.
